Mallory

I looked down at the rings. “This has to be a mistake.”

Assuming that Dean bought the rings, that led me to wonder why. What was he thinking? What had I been thinking in agreeing to this?

I paced in the suite, hoping Dean would be back here saying it was all a joke. But, instead, it was an elaborate plan by Carmine to get back at me. That sounded far-fetched, but I was grasping at straws.

How could I be married to Dean?

We'd never gotten out of each other's friend zone. I stared down at Vegas, not really seeing it. This was one thing that happened in Vegas that wouldn't stay here. Unless we could get a quickie divorce. I knew nothing about the process but figured in a town that would let people get married quickly, and they'd let us get divorced with the same speed.

I couldn't focus, so I didn't bother opening my laptop. I should try and get the information, but it may be a moot point. If the marriage wasn't legit, we did not need to get it annulled. We also had to stop drinking so much.

At least my hangover was gone, but it was replaced with worry for the future. I didn’t want anything from Dean. I hoped he would know that already without me saying it. I just wanted a dissolution and to go back to the way things had been between us. Could we do that?

We hadn’t had sex, so that was a bonus.

Things would be worse if they had, which made me wonder why we didn't. That would have been the natural conclusion to the night. Maybe Dean didn't find me attractive. I shook myself. None of that mattered right now.

We had to end this marriage if it was legit.

Dean opened the door and strode into the suite. From the look on his face, I could tell that it wasn't good news. "I talked to Carmine and Bella."

“And?”

He stood in the middle of the room as he spoke. He hadn't approached me. He hadn't looked at me, even. "The wedding was legitimate. Apparently, I have a ring at the same jewelry store I bought yours. So they're sizing it."

“You have a receipt?”

“Probably in that suit with the credit card receipt for everything else we did last night.”

He finally came to stand in front of me. He put his hands on my arms, and I could tell he was struggling. "I'll fix this, Mallory. I promise."

“We’ll fix this, Dean. We both did this. There was no coercion involved, I’m sure. You didn’t hold a gun to my head.”

“I don’t carry here,” Dean said, “so I have no gun to hold to your head.”

I smiled at his feeble attempt to make a joke. He was boggled by this situation as much as I was. “We were both complicit in this.” I put a hand on his face. “Don’t stress. We’ll figure this out, Dean.”

“I’d say we’ve been in worse scrapes, but this one is beyond any mischief we’ve done in the past.
